I don’t want an American spell checker. I don’t need words like ‘colour’ underlined, for god’s sake. I shouldn’t have to install it separately when the system UI is set to en-UK. It’s easy to install, but it should assign the spelling dictionary based on the language your system is set to.

One thing I hate about these aut-confrences, it feels that poor people are not actually invited. It frustrates me because I want to go and meet my fellow activists and talk shop and I am too busy worrying about food expenses, and if we’re still going to have an apartment this month.

I hear this. And while they do have a disability price (which honestly would still require me saving up and planning and talking with housemates), not everyone is officially diagnosed and not everyone who is diagnosed is on disability. It actually kinda irks me that the slight sliding scale (full-time, not full-time, disability) doesn’t consider the people who, say, can’t get diagnosed due to money or social concerns. It doesn’t seem to have scholarships, either, which is a big “no poor people” flag for me.

Which is interesting because, let’s face it, autism can make working “regular” jobs extremely challenging. Of course I don’t have stats for this (have any studies been made?) but I hypothesize that it isn’t rare for autistics to be unemployed.

Right? Doesn’t anyone know the stats for full time employment and people on the spectrum? God forbid the folks who are on Disability and have transport issues can’t make it either. I am SSI and money is still fucking tight. I might as well fucking sell a kidney if I am gonna go to AutCom or Autreat.

Fuck accessibility right? Especially autists who don’t have a community outside of the interbutts.

Over the past year I’ve grown incredibly tired of A) conferences that are sneakily only for rich people, and B) autism hierarchies. Functioning labels and ~proper diagnoses~ and all of this bullshit make me incredibly angry.

I’m not ~properly~ diagnosed for many reasons, one of them being lacking my family’s support and thus being unable to even consider actively pursuing a diagnosis until I was an adult. Which, as we know, makes me basically undiagnosable because so few people diagnose adults and sdlkjflsakjflkj. Not everyone has access to healthcare. Not everyone has a supportive community. Not everyone even understands that they’re actually different and not just difficult. And these are the people who need these conferences most. =//////

I think the problem is that hardly any of us really have any money.

Conferences for socially valued people are in a way better position to offer scholarships and stuff, because they can charge more to people who can afford to pay it.

But what’s the base of autistic people who can afford to pay higher fees to allow other people to go?

ACI is entirely funded by grants including transport and food and everything. It is also self-diagnosis-inclusive (as all ASAN related events/affairs are). Of course, there is still the issue of having to be a college student. Hard to get fully-funded grants when there isn’t some type of clear-to-NT overall community benefit that will result, unfortunately (in this case, autism-friendly support and advocacy on campuses).

I honestly won’t be very happy to leave because I know the odds of me ending up in an autistic community like this are very slim unless I’m successful in creating one on my campus.

I’ve had problems like that with things like Autreat, which I’ve never been able to go to. It’s just always been too expensive. I’d like to see if I can finally go next year.

Also worth pointing out explicitly: These are not good fish for beginners.

They’re big, messy carp who never totally stop growing, and are actually one of the most demanding freshwater fish to keep properly. They are mostly herbivorous, and need at least one 75% water change weekly on their big tanks and lots of filtration. They’re also very social, and do much better in groups.

And they’re totally worth the extra care. :) At least when they’re happy, they’re like puppies with fins.
